Jean-michel basquiat collection
Line sheet project
Project Brief:
Our line sheets were to be based upon a real brand, for which I chose PALACE Skateboards, and we were required to have exactly 8 different garments with three variations each.
I chose to do my project paying homage to Jean-Michel Basquiat, who is one of my inspirations and who I have been fond of since I was young, as he inspired me to pursue art and be myself.
The Ask:
Beginning this project my class had just finished learning patterns and creating flats in Illustrator which sparked my mind to go extremely abstract. I had been reading a lot about Basquiat leading up to this project which made me feel that I should focus on bringing his art to life in the fashion industry. I began by choosing the garments I wanted to use within the collection, so I chose a fair array of different streetwear items.
PROCESS:
Designing each garment came directly from various paintings by Basquiat. I began pulling striking elements throughout each piece, and icons that completed each painting and turned them into patterns. For example, I used his work titled ‘Trumpet’ as the inspiration behind the hoodie in this collection. Most notably the icon of the trumpet player and the crown are used as the prominent parts of the pattern while the sound waves are used to offset it just slightly.
OUTCOME
Ultimately, I learned a lot about Adobe Suites during the process. Given the amount of time spent experimenting and testing new ideas.
